- 13 years and 6 months
Type what you spend each month, what you have saved, what you add and the return you expect. The calculator gives your FIRE number, how far along you are and how long it takes to get there.
How the FIRE number is worked out
Your FIRE number is a year of spending multiplied by the years of spending your portfolio must cover. At a 4% withdrawal rate that is 25 years, so spending 3,000 a month asks for 900,000. A lower rate, such as 3%, is more cautious and asks for more.
How the years left are worked out
The portfolio grows at your expected yearly return, compounded monthly, and each month adds your contribution. The calculator counts the months until the total reaches your FIRE number. A yearly return of 7% grows a month by about 0.57%, not by 7% divided by 12.
- The return is a yearly rate, not a promise. Try a lower one as well as a higher one.
- Spending is in today's money, so use a return after inflation for an answer in today's terms.
- Everything is in one currency of your choice. Nothing is converted.
A planning aid, not financial advice. The dashboard runs the same math on your real portfolio, in any currency.
